It is a hot summer afternoon you were sneaking though the rainforest that is the habitat of the Indominus Rex (or Dominica as you call her). “Where are you, wee dinosaur? I’m gonna eat you once I find you.” you chuckle. Then you hear a rustle behind a bush. “Are you over there?” you cry as you look behind the bush. No Dommie there, you thought. Then you see something white dart into another bush behind you. “What’s the time mister wolf? 7 o’clock, dinner time!” you shout as you part away the foliage to reveal the half-a-month-old dinosaur. Your grinning face slowly changed to a look of concern as you noticed your Dominica acting strange. Her red eyes looked puffy and watery and her nostrils were covered in slimy snot. To top it off, she curled up into a scaly ball and began to groan like a bored child in school. “Oh my gosh, I’ve got to get you to a vet!” you cry. Quickly you snap on a pair of rubber gloves from your pocket and took a thin blanket from a first aid kit in your backpack which was conveniently hanging from a tree. You scoop the sickly bundle into the blanket and walked to the nearest telephone. “Hello? We have a situation, the Indominus is sick. Please send in a vet, quickly!” you say into the phone. “Alright, y/n, stand by for a vet to arrive in twenty minutes.” The operator replied. You hang up and you look down at your Dommie. Instantly, she shrieked loudly. You touch the top of her head with two fingers, she’s getting a fever, you thought. The little dinosaur shrieked even more which caused you to bob the bundle around as though she were a human baby.

‘Come stop your crying,
It’ll be alright.
Just take my hand,
Hold it tight.
I will protect you from all around you,
I will be here,
Don’t you cry.’

Twenty minutes later, the vet arrives with his tools at the helm. “Just lay the dinosaur there.” He tells you as he pointed to the ground. You place Dominica on the spot and removed the blanket. “Tell me the symptoms while I prepare my equipment.” The vet commanded. “Well Doctor, she has a fever; a snotty nose; puffy eyes and shortly before you arrived she was clawing at her belly and has developed slight traces of foam at the mouth.” You describe. “Clawing at her belly? She must have an upset stomach. Once we have her pacified, we’ll use an x-ray to see what she ate, it could be the cause of her sickness.” The Vet said. After dosing her with a shot of tranquilizer, the vet sets up a wireless device that sends x-ray photographs to his laptop. Thirty seconds later, three images appear on the computer screen. “See those black lumps?” the vet asks you. “Those must be the seeds of some kind of plant that must be growing here.” “Isn’t Dominica a carnivore? How can she eat plant matter if...” you drift of and you realize that many animals learn things from their parents’ actions. “She must have seen me eat celery stalks for lunch and thought she should do the same!” you cry. “Don’t worry; I have a friend who is a botanist. I’ll send him over right away so that he could identify the seeds in the Indominus’ gut. For now, we’ll give her some shots in case she is vulnerable to contract another disease.” So after making the unconscious Dominica breathe in some anaesthetic, the vet gives her a few shots in the flank and arms. Afterwards, you stroke her spines lightly.

‘For one so small,
You seem so strong.
My arms will hold you,
Keep you safe and warm.
This bond between us,
Can’t be broken
I will be here,
Don’t you cry.
‘Cause you’ll be in my heart.
Yes, you’ll be in my heart,
From this day on,
Now and forever more.
You’ll be in my heart,
No matter what they say.
You’ll be here in my heart, always.’

As you and the vet waited for the botanist to arrive, your boss, Claire arrived. She must have learned about Dominica being sick, you think. “Don’t tell me the Indominus had gotten sick because she saw you eat vegetables and thought she should do the same!” Claire shouted at you. “It wasn’t my fault, babies learn skills from the actions of the parents; how was I to know she would try to eat plants.” You calmly replied. “Look,” Claire said in an attempt to hide her anger. “This is just one mistake, if you make another one that threatens her health then I’ll take away your authority over her and we’ll resume the raising program we’ve made for her prior to her birth.” Suddenly you remembered how you questioned the method in that program, you knew Dominica couldn’t live in an isolated environment and so you volunteered to be her surrogate mother. “I hate to say this, but seeing that she is only half a month old she has already seen me as her mother. If you isolate her, should I put her in harm’s way, she’ll wonder where I am and you can’t just thrust her into the world at this stage, not while she is still learning the ways of her kind anyway.” You explain. “No, y/n, my conscience is clear. If you fail a second time, I’ll take her away from you. Understood?” Claire commanded. You slowly nod in agreement. Then you turn back at the still asleep dinosaur and slowly weep at the pressure you are now put under.

‘Why can’t they understand
The way we feel?
They just don’t trust
What they can’t explain
I know we’re different but,
Deep inside us,
We’re not that different at all.’

Finally the vet arrived shortly after Claire’s spat with you. “Hey guys! First off, I’ll need the x-ray photos.” He said. “Sure thing!” replied the vet who handed the botanist the photos. The botanist squints at the x-rays and he gasps in reaction. “What’s wrong, doctor?” you ask. “My mum told me about this, but I didn’t think lightning would strike twice. You guys need to pump the seeds out of the Indominus’ stomach; I need to find the plant responsible. Who’s the person that takes care of the Indominus?” the botanist instructs. “I am,” you cry. “Good, you’ll help me find it.” you nod in reply. “I’ll take the Indominus to the animal clinic in order to pump her stomach. Meet me when you found the plant responsible.” The vet said. As you and the botanist entered into the enclosure forest, you look back at Dominica about to be loaded onto the vet’s van.

‘And you’ll be in my heart,
Yes, you’ll be in my heart.
From this day on,
Now and forever more.’

“So do you know what this plant looks like, Doctor?” you ask the botanist. “I have looked at illustrations of it in the plant books my mum gave me for Christmas. She always told me about how she came across it. She actually came here to Isla Nublar and came across a sick triceratops that ate the seeds from that plant. The same kind of seeds that your Indominus ate. The plant is the West Indian lilac; I suppose someone who designed this enclosure didn’t know that it can be poisonous to certain reptiles. So once we find the lilac we must remove it and any others so that we wouldn’t get a repeat of this incident.” “Alright then!” you shout. Half an hour later, you come across the very edge of the enclosure, Dominica always came here as a sleeping spot. You see what looks like a cluster of purple-blue flowers. You cry out to the botanist, “Are these the lilacs?” “Bingo!” he replied. “Now let’s uproot these blighters before anything else happens.” He added. Within twenty minutes, you and the botanist uprooted all the lilacs and any seed pods that had fallen. You also kept an eye out for anymore before heading to the clinic. Fortunately, there were no other plants and so you both leave the enclosure after a job well done.

As you and the botanist enter the animal clinic, the first thing you see is Dominica asleep in a small cage. You sigh in relief that she is finally getting better. Her nose had become less snotty and there was less foam in her mouth. “She still has a fever,” said the vet. “She’ll have to stay in here for a few days so that her fever doesn’t get worse. You’ll be visiting her often won’t you?” he asked. “Of course, otherwise she’ll wonder where I am.” You reply. You then put on some rubber gloves before opening the cage and stroking the little dinosaurs’ side, humming a small lullaby in the process.

‘Don’t listen to them,
‘Cause what do they know?
We need each other,
To have, to hold.
They’ll see in time,
I know.
When destiny calls you,
You must be strong.
‘Cause I may not be with you,
But you’ve got to hold on.
They’ll see in time,
I know.
We’ll show them together cause,
You’ll be in my heart.
Yes, you’ll be in my heart.
From this day on,
Now and forever more.
Oh, you’ll be in my heart,
No matter what they say,
You’ll be in my heart, always.'

As you leave the clinic to your apartment across the island, the lullaby still sings in your head, making you happy to be Dominica’s surrogate mother. No matter how much pressure Claire will put on you, you’ll still love the hybrid dinosaur...

‘Always,
I’ll be with you.
When I’ll be there for you always,
Always and always.
Just look over your shoulder,
Just look over your shoulder,
Just look over your shoulder,
I’ll be there,
Always.’
